On the subject of communicating with me about your custom graphic design order:
Many of you know that this is not my full time job! I am a full time mom (I have six children who take up so much of my time) and a part time stamper, demo and designer. I have never and will never EVER get upset if a customer emails me to check on the status of their order. I actually appreciate it. If you are familiar with Gmail - any new email pops up previously sent emails in a thread, so I can go back and check on the status of where we stand with your order.

Do not ever hesitate to contact me if you feel like you have not heard from me in a reasonable amount of time. Some days I can really crank through the banners, other days I have so much on my plate that the design orders have to take a back burner. There is only two weeks left of school, so we are getting into graduations (Kindergarten), picnics, field trips and teacher gift time. I will likely be responding to you in the evening! If you have any questions or concerns about your order, please feel free to send me an email. I do not ever take offense to an email. A simple "Beth, how are things coming along?" will light a fire under my kiester! I promise you, I have never had a customer who was difficult. If I cannot reasonable complete your request, I will let you know!

How to add your new Blog Banner to your blog

You have just received your new banner from Freckled Fun. You will receive a final banner via email which will be the full size version just for your typepad or blogger blog. I recommend that you save a copy of the banner to your computer. If you would like, set up an account with Photobucket or Flickr and upload your banner to either one of those online photo hosting sites. That way if something happens to your computer, you still have a copy for yourself (don't worry, I save copies of blog banners for you). Use the following directions to upload your banner to your dashboard.

In Blogger

Go to your Blogger dashboard (the main page where you edit your blog)
Click the Layout tab
Click the Edit button in the Header box.
Be sure to leave the Blog Title and Blog Description boxes empty (this will avoid unnecessary text being uploaded atop your banner).
Select Image and then decide whether you an image from your computer or the internet. If your banner is saved on your computer, you choose From your computer. Select From the web if you uploaded your banner you made to an online photo-hosting site like Flickr or Photobucket.
At the Placement tab, choose Instead of title and description.
Click Save Changes.

TypePad

Go to your TypePad dashboard.
Click the Design button
Click Change Theme.
Click Edit This Element which appears under Page Banner.
Beneath Optional, click the box next to Use this banner image instead of a text title.
Click Browse and find your banner in your computer (or put in the URL of your banner from the location where you stored it on the internet {Photobucket or Flickr}).
Click Save Changes.

Back From California

I spent the better part (emphasize on the word BETTER) of last week in California with my WMWH Todd. He let us extend our trip an extra day so that I would be able to attend an SCS (Splitcoaststampers) function called SCSMV (Southern California Stamp Mania 5). WOW! What a trip. You can read about it on my blog.

Needless to say, a few days of no internet left me behind on some of my projects. I have not forgotten about ANYONE. Please send me an email silaika @ gmail dot com to let me know where you stand on your project. I will happily finish things up!

In the mean time, our 2 year old has come down with a case of CHICKEN POX! (Yes, she was vaccinated). So I am home for the next few days, trying to keep her away from her siblings. I will periodically check my email!

Kylie contacted me with an image of a card which she had seen on a popular stamping website. Although those images are copyright, I was able to create a design very similar using my computer. It was really easy, and through the magic of digital design, I was able to come up with this design which even *I* fell in love with. The brush was hand drawn and then the leaves and the flowers were added on afterwards. The colors were selected by Kylie. I am proud of this one! {wipes tears as she sends this one off in to the big blogging world}

Blog-a-verssary

Is that a word? Well, I just passed my one year blog-a-verssary for the design blog - I started making blog banners and watermarks last year. What a whirlwind! The design blog is one year old -- as of the 27th! (that makes me LEAP for Joy -- on a leap year no less)

Here is my story!

Last winter -- there were some not so nicey nice people grabbing images off blogs and other online paper crafting sources. (tisk tisk people...play nice). I was proficient enough to create my own watermarks - relatively quickly -- so I made a few for some of my close stampin' friends. One of my bomb-a-licious babes was none other than Cami (Cambria Turnbow). I had just convinced her to make a blog and start sharing her bomb-a-licious creations with the world. Someone asked her where she got her watermarks -- and she asked me if I would help them out. She made me promise to charge -- since it was a service I was providing. I figured that it would help me supplement my stamping~~addiction problem~~ er...spending. I figured "what the heck...why not!"

Freckled Fun Designs was born. I soon expanded from watermarks to blog banners and web headers. I remember making things for people and having them LOVE them. What a thrill that was. So my blog-a-verssary was the 27th of February. I am going to give away blog candy on my regular blog in honor of this blog-a-verssary...so pop over there for the official Blog-a-versary Blog Candy thread!

I don't speak French! LOL! Somehow I managed to create this beautiful banner and upload it to blogger (the Blogger information on her site was in French). I must know this stuff like the back of my hand!

Moira asked me to create a blog banner for her based on a card which she had created. I was able to create something which both she and I were very proud of! Maybe when I go to France I will understand a few words here and there (yes, Todd and I are jet-setting off across the pond to Provence and Paris in May). I am thrilled and giddy! It will be our second honeymoon! Wonder where Moira is in relation to Paris!?!?!

Wild Dragonfly Designs

Danielle wanted me to create a blog banner which was unique! I showed her my graphics file and she loved the images, but really wanted to incorporate a little bit of something of her own. She sent me a dragonfly image which she scanned. I cleaned up the image and created a graphic! We were able to incorporate the dragonfly on the banner and her watermark.

Do you have a specific image you want to incorporate in your banner or watermark? I can hand draw your image (like I did for the Lucky Clucker) or we can use your drawing.

Quite a few people have been having me update their watermarks to 2008, so I have spent a lot of time doing that. I have also created some new ones. The circle watermarks are still a best seller, but I adore these elegant script ones in white. The name faded in the background, bolder in the front. I also loved the new elegant one I created for Cami ( a special gift for her - she had a rough week). Melissa's cow is unique and Nancy Riley's leaf - classy!

Amber requested a new banner for her new store. She is adopting again and is raising money by selling her papercrafts. I had created her original banner last year. So for the store, we wanted to do something similar, but step it up a notch!

Watermark Sample

Here is a sample watermark which you can try out with your photo editing software. I get several requests for watermarks for people, but they are not sure whether they are able to use a watermark with their software. Click on the watermark below, then you can save it as a .png file. Open the watermark in your photo editing software. Then open up the image you want to watermark. Drag and Drop or Copy and Paste the watermark to your photograph. Save as a .jpg image.

Just about a year ago, I started Freckled Fun Designs to give the paper crafting community a resource for custom watermarks and blog banners for their websites and blogs. I appreciate you entrusting me with your custom design work. I must admit there have been times when I get frustrated because the process is very time consuming. I spend a great deal of time answering emails and creating items which I am proud of. Over the past several weeks, despite the holidays and being on vacation with my family, I still managed to create items for customers. I have had a difficult time keeping up with demand and I appreciate your patience while I work on your project. I am disheartened that there are people that request items and expect me to turn them around in a few days. I don't like to rush my work and I do have a large family which takes up a majority of my time. If you want a design, please be patient. I have had people request blog banners, I have spent several hours on the designs and they no longer want them. I will no longer be working on the weekends, so if you send me a request for a banner or watermark over the weekend, I will probably see the email, but not likely start the work until the following Monday. I appreciate you letting me put my family first.

I have been here! Promise! I have been working extremely HARD! I need to share! This banner was unusual and FUN! A chicken, a cup of coffee and a basket of eggs. The chicken was to be running away from the barn. Well, Bonnie was specific and I had NOTHING to work with. No available graphics or images. She showed me some ideas of what she wanted, so I hand drew this image. I created my own digital image and colored it in!

You may have noticed something subtle today on Nichole's blog. Actually, I am hoping you didn't notice it - it is her new custom watermark. You see, you do not want to really see it, you just want to have it protect your work and not distract from the photograph. I think I captured that for Nichole. You see, a few weeks ago, I read on her blog that someone had taken an image from her blog and attempted to use that image to sell product. I sent her a PM and let her know that I was more than willing to help her protect her images. Suddenly this morning, over coffee, I read my name on HER BLOG! Kodak Picture It! and Watermark

One of my customers was able to use their watermark in Kodak Picture It! Here are the directions for you! If you would like a sample watermark to play around with to check the compatability of your software, please email me and I will gladly send you a watermark to try out.

STEP BY STEP:

Open watermark with Picture IT
In Picture IT click on "Open another picture..."

Both watermark and card will display in the "tray" at the bottom of the screen.

Click on your card
Click and drag watermark over card in the display window

your watermark should be located over your card in the display window.

Move watermark into position.
Hold shift key down while clicking on both images (either in display window or "stack" at the right side of screen).
Group images together
Save as JPEG
Upload your newly watermarked card to your gallery or blog!

Well, I am slowly returning to the banner and watermark business. Back to school has proved to be just as challenging as having all six home with me! If you sent me a request in the past 9 weeks, I have probably sent you the files for your design. Please be patient because I have less than 9 minutes to myself every 24 hours and some days, creating watermarks or blog banners is not on the top of the list (showering and toothbrushing comes first, sorry). I promise we will create the best custom look for your blog or website! I just want to be able to devote the time to each creation. Each project is very important to me and I love to get feedback from you! Maternity Leave

Hi Everyone! I just wanted to put a brief post on the blog about my upcoming time off - I will try my best to get all banners and watermarks done prior to the baby's arrival. We all know that things are unexpected, so please be patient if you have sent me a request and I have not responded. I have recently found several emails in my spam folder. I am not sure why, so I just responded to those which were sitting lonely in my spam folder (sorry).

I have roughly 3 weeks left prior to my due date, and plan on working right up until the end of the pregnancy. If there is any news of an early arrival - it will be posted on the Freckled Fun blog. You can expect that with number 6 arriving, I will need a few days to get adjusted before answering emails. I hope you can understand that my time will be limited and I will try and fulfill requests in the orders they are received! If you have sent me an email and I have not responded, just send me a second email and let me know - or put a comment on the blog and let me know that you sent an email and I will try and track it down!

So you have decided to spruce up your blog with a new custom banner from Freckled Fun Designs. You have made your final approval for the banner. There is only one decision left to make. What do you do with the banner now? You need to upload the banner to the web!

If you are a blogspot user - you can choose to have FFD upload your banner to your blog. This is not a simple process. You have to change HTML code and delete items from this code. It is a process which requires you to know which EXACT lines of code to delete and modify. Additionally, if you want your background color to match your banner, you have to change the HEX code of the background. I will send you a word document explaining which lines to modify. I will warn you now, the code is long and extensive. It can be a scary process.
{is your head spinning yet from all these acronyms?} For a mere $5 charge - I will upload your banner to blogspot, change the html code and change your background color. How simple is that? You set up a temporary password - email me the temp password and your user sign in and I take care of the rest. I send you an email when your blog is ready for the big reveal!

For Typepad users - send me an email and I will give you the most clear step by step directions to add your new banner - at no charge. If you need the hex code to match your banner, I will provide that for you at no additional charge!

Here are some little tidbits of information which people seem to have about watermarks....

WHAT EXACTLY IS A WATERMARKS:

A watermark is a transparent image saved as a PNG (Portable Network Graphic) which contains any mixture of text, graphics and copyright information. The PNG is a file which can be copied and pasted onto your digital photograph (.jpg file or scan) to protect your work. It is becoming more popular to share work in the Paper Crafting industry. The purpose of the watermark is to protect your image.

HOW DO I ADD MY NEW WATERMARK TO MY PHOTO:

If you are using photo editing software to modify your digital photos or scans, you should easily be able to add a watermark to your work. Some photo editing software allows you to drag and drop your .png file (watermark) directly onto your photograph. Others allow you to copy and paste your file. Once you have received your file with the watermark, you open it using your photo editing software. At this time, you should also open the document which you would like to watermark. Once both the files are open, you can copy (ctrl-c) the watermark and paste (ctrl-v) the watermark onto your photograph. The watermark is a moveable file – so you should be able to move the transparent image exactly where you want it on your photograph. Save your file as a .jpg image and you have an image which is now embedded with a watermark.

Remember - if you are using PhotoShop Elements, make sure that the Auto Select Layer option is UNCHECKED! (upper left-hand corner of window)? If not - you may get a blocked image around your watermark.

Here is a link to Joanne's site where I am one of the donating bloggers for her fund raiser! Joanne is doing a fund raiser for something which has always touched me very closely. Breast Cancer is a disease which will not discriminate and most certainly will occur in someone you know and love. My late mother in law was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, as was my Grandmother. There have been several friends over the past few years who have also been touched by this disease. Most recently, my friends Kendra who is currently cancer free. Luckily, she had the support of good friends Mel, Sharon and Lisa who all experienced the same scary diagnosis and similar treatments. Watermarks are great for protecting your images. Occasionally, people ask me to create a watermark without knowing whether or not their photo software is actually able to use a watermark file. Let's talk about watermark files for a moment. When I create a watermark file - it's final version which you will receive from me is a PNG file. PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics A PNG file is used to overlay other images. The image is transparent with the background image or text showing through. This is the file you place atop your photograph which is a JPEG or JPG image. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. A JPEG file is solid. These files are generally used as a background type of image. Your project photo is a jpg/jpeg imgae and you want to layer the png (watermark) on top of it.

When we are creating your watermark - I will send you the files as a jpg/jpeg so that you can view them. You will not be able to use these as watermarks because they are solid images. Once you have approved the final image - I will send you the PNG file. Save this file to your computer as a PNG file. Put it in a location where you can easily access it. Create a folder in your documents folder - call it my watermarks Or better yet - if you want - create a folder and call it my cards or my papercrafts and keep it in there.

Photo Editing Software:
What you need is photo editing software that allows you to use PNG files. I am not familiar with every photo editing software. I use Adobe Photoshop CS (creative suite). I know that Adobe PhotoShop Elements (PSE),Microsoft Digital Image Pro (DIP) , Corel/Jasc Paint Shop Pro (PSP), Ulead Photoimpact (PI) and Adobe Photoshop (PS) are all wonderful photo editing software programs. You should really research their level of difficulty and your needs prior to diving in and purchasing a software. Will you be doing any digital scrapbooking? Try a version out before you buy it. You wouldn't buy a car or a nice pair of shoes without giving them a test drive or walk through. Don't spend $100 on something you are only going to use to add a watermark. If digital scrapbooking is in your future - get one of these programs. Check out this link for more details, links to downloads of trial versions, etc. There is also a free software called GIMP which you can google search on (keyword: gimp) and download.

One final issue people seem to be having:

Are you getting a box around your "transparent" png when you attempt to use your watermark in PhotoShop Elements?
When you open the PS Elements, is the Auto Select Layer option selected (upper left-hand corner of window)? Try unchecking that box and your problem should be solved!

The information which was NEW TO ME (not new to Stampin' Up!®) was the information about the Trademark designation information. Several customers have inquired as to the rules - so I have now placed them here. Please do not think that this is a way for me to "drum" up business. On the contrary - I am offering to fix any website and add on the appropriate trademark designation symbol free of charge to any customer who feels they need to bring their FreckledFun Watermak up to Stampin' Up!® compliance standards.

April Watermarks

So some of you were inquiring as to the Stampin' Up! requirements which I learned of last month. In my opinion, it seems a little excessive, but if you would like to have the watermark requirements (Per SU! standards), you need to to have the copyright symbol, Stampin' Up!, the registered trademark symbol and the dates (1990-2007). I can fix any watermark if you are concerned about compliance.

Some people are concerned that if they put the year, they will have to have it changed every year. I will keep a copy of your original watermark and we can easily modify the year for a small fee. Please feel free to email me with any questions (silaika@gmail.com).

Did you know that I had a watermark officially approved by Stampin' Up! the other day. One watermark was created with a hand drawn doodle which was very awesome, but very similar to a doodle in the new catalog, so just to make sure that there were no problems, Stampin' Up! was presented with the image and they had us make one minor text modification and we were approved. Do you know the standards which Stampin' Up! requires on their watermarks? If not, please check with me. If your image was made prior to March 29, please let me know if you want me to modify your watermark to ensure that it meets Stampin' Up! rigid specifications.

If you have an idea - you will find that I am pretty good at helping you figure out whether it is feasable to actually come up with the exact result of your blog banner/watermark idea. I start out with an initial design based on your description and then we tweak the design until you are completely satisfied. Sometimes it is my thick skull which stands in the way! {grin}. Just remember to be clear on your color choices and if you have an RGB code - we can incorporate that in most backgrounds and images or graphics. Just ask me - if I cannot do it I will tell you!

One by one - I am reeling them in! This time - it was Piris' turn. Have you ever seen her work on the SCS site. A former dirty girl - she was the amazing inventor of the chipboard shaped bookmarks which I wrote the tutorial for on SCS (with credit of course).

So I tell her - WHAT are you waiting for? I set her blog up and used this temporary banner until we could dive deep into her creative mind and put together something POY-FECT!

I tell you - I have been SUPAH busy! These are just a few of the many watermarks I have been making. Each one, special and unique - just like the stamper that they represent! So - now I have a favor to ask - if you like one of the samples - send me an email - say - I love the Emily Gunnell sample - please make me one with (INSERT YOUR EXACT WORDING). Tell me if you want white, black or transparent! What are the differences in the three - well, black, white or any color will sit on your photo like craft ink sits on cardstock. The transparent image is more like versamark - it sets on your image - but blends in and doesn't distract from the image. It is all your personal preference!
